Message from Don Wallette, President Russia and Caspian, ConocoPhillips
Our company has been building relationships with Russian energy developers and governmental authorities since the early 1990s – going back to our Polar Lights joint venture with Rosneft.
During these years ConocoPhillips has been able to create a strong international team whose core is made up of highly qualified Russian personnel. Over the course of these years we have formed reliable partnerships with leading Russian energy companies including LUKOIL and Rosneft. A business strategy based on close cooperation with Russian enterprises has given ConocoPhillips access to some impressive opportunities. Our joint venture with Rosneft - Polar Lights Company – was the first ever project involving foreign participation to begin actual operations in northwestern Russia.
Those relationships have grown significantly within the last few years as we have made sizeable new investments.
The LUKOIL-ConocoPhillips strategic alliance, which began in September 2004, offers a successful model of how companies and countries can work together in the new industry paradigm.
By the end of 2007, ConocoPhillips had invested more than $10 billion in our Russian relationships.
Our alliance with LUKOIL is much more than just a financial transaction. It is a true partnership, fortified by a strong alignment of ConocoPhillips’ objectives with those of LUKOIL and its other shareholders.
We’re optimistic that our involvement will continue to grow – both within Russia as well as through collaborative arrangements with Russian companies that have global activities and aspirations.
